What
is a Compere needed for and do we need one at our Event?
The answer to that is very simple, yes!
A
Compere sets the tone and atmosphere for the evening in his
first few sentences. A Compere should be someone you warm
to. He should be friendly, likeable and approachable, while
maintaining an air of authority. He should, if needed, be
able to cover any of the inevitable glitches that arise during
an Event.
Say
the band has a problem just before they are due to start,
or a guest speaker has disappeared, or the raffle / auction
prizes haven’t been prepared. These things always happen
at Events.
The
chances are, that if you have a good Compere, you will never
know that there were any problems or heart stopping moments
behind the scenes!
Quite
often, a Compere is overlooked till the last moment, and yet,
a bad one, or one of very little experience can kill an event
stone dead.

can always use 'Tony' from Marketing, as he is a nice lad who
makes people laugh in the office and he will do it for free!
Or 'Joe', as he did a bit of public speaking some years ago. |

If
any of the problems arise that have been mentioned, what would
'Joe' or 'Tony' do then? How would they fill for fifteen minutes
until the Event is ready to carry on?
Some
organisers think that a comedian is suitable for hosting an
event, as many comedian's will tell you who have tried it
and struggled, compering and hosting is a totally different
art form from just going on and telling jokes (having worked
as a both a stand up comedian and professional host/compere,
Steve knows!). You have to read the room, build the audience
to a level where they can expect something really good. You
have to make it fun, but professional and most important,
